The chatswood house began life as a typical californian bungalow common among sydney’s north shore. the dwelling was disconnected from the backyard, constraining daily living to be carried out indoors.
Our solution was very simple and direct. Provide a new extension that plugs into the back of the existing dwelling and have a very large opening at the rear of the property bringing direct North sunlight into the interiors and establish outdoor views through walls of glazing.
A generous deck acts as the link between the house and the garden creating a semi-open area that offers top views of the immediate garden and picturesque share vistas of neighbours landscaping greenery and roofs beyond.
This simple approach extends to the use of materials. Walls match the existing face brick, the rear facade differentiates itself by the extensive use of sustainable timber. The oversize timber fascia extending from the gable roof and down the end side walls frames the house and gives a distinct strong architectural element.
